If you can imagine it, you can make it

Two weeks ago I attended the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) in Medellín, the second largest city in Colombia. Organized by the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), the event has grown significantly during its eight-year history. Starting off as a gathering of the organizations that host Global Entrepreneurship Week, GEC now brings together policymakers, investors, researchers, entrepreneurs and startup enthusiasts from all corners of the world. Together, they help founders start and scale, while at the same time working towards building one healthy global entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Organizing GEC is an excellent opportunity for a host city to showcase its entrepreneurial and innovative landscape. And it is no coincidence that Medellín was chosen as the host city of the GEC 2016. It is an amazing example of a place that underwent a tremendous transformation – from one of the world’s most dangerous cities to the ”Innovative City of the Year” 2013, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The city’s response to violence and fear was investing in infrastructure and education and shifting focus to the people of Medellín. Medellín boasts an impressive urban area with well-built roads and the only metro system in the country. However, there is still a less modern, poorer side of the city on its outskirts, the so-called favelas. In an attempt to make these parts better connected to the city, a cable car system has been built.

Another effort towards integration was building a big library in the middle of a favela, to bring education closer to the poor. Spain Library is an unusual structure, built with very small windows in order to isolate the space from the dangerous world outside. As Mayor of Medellín pointed out during the gala event organized for GEC delegates, the way forward is to continue empowering the young generation by investing in education and entrepreneurship.

During the last day of GEC, the international delegates got a closer look at Medellín’s thriving entrepreneurial scene. We visited Fondo Emprender, Latin America’s largest seed capital grant fund and met some of their amazing startups. One of them is Row Tecnología, a construction company offering environmentally friendly building solutions with focus on energy and operational efficiency, and security. Another great startup is Soluciones Roboticas Integrales – three young men who claim ”if you can imagine it, you can make it”. One of the solutions they offer is mine detection and removal.

Coming back from Colombia, the main impression I take with me is that of achieving the impossible. Just as Jonathan Ortmans pointed out in his opening speech, entrepreneurship is now way beyond just commercial purposes, it is about the ”possibilities of human endeavors”. And the city of Medellín certainly proves this point.

Anonyma alkoholister för entreprenörer

Under den första dagen på Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) i Medellin samlades GEW-värdar från fler än 160 länder. Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), som presenterades på GEC förra året, fortsätter att växa. Idén bakom GEN är att skapa ett året-runt-paraply av globala program och initiativ som riktar sig mot entreprenörer. GENs ordförande Jonatahan Ortmans poängterade att syftet är att vara ett globalt nätverks som omfattar alla aktörer i det entreprenöriella ekosystemet.

Enligt undersökningen GEDI Index används bara 52 procent av världens entreprenöriella kapacitet. Ett av GENs primära uppdrag är att få fler människor att välja entreprenörskap. Ett annat viktigt uppdrag är att ändra folks attityd till entreprenörskap och inspirera blivande entreprenörer att våga experimentera med sina idéer.

Ett av programmen under GEN-paraplyet som lyftes fram under gårdagen var Startup Open, en global tävling för nya startups. I Startup Open 2015 placerade sig två svenska företag, Pricelizer och Zeifie, på topp 50-listan.

En annan nyhet inom GEN är Startup Huddle, som Jonathan Ortmans presenterade som ”Anonyma alkoholister för entreprenörer”. Syftet med initiativet är att utbilda, utveckla och samla entreprenörer globalt. Det är ett nätverk ”för entreprenörer av entreprenörer”.

Dag två på GEC hade ett bredare fokus. Några av höjdpunkterna var ”GEC ministerial”, där ministrar från olika länder pratade entreprenörskap med varandra, och finalen av pitchtävlingen ”Get in the Ring”.

En av dagens mest inspirerande talare var författaren Elmira Bayrasli. Hon skriver om globala startups och entreprenörer och besökte Sverige under GEW 2015, som talare på två av våra evenemang. Elmira medverkade i en panel som handlade om framtidens entreprenörer. Hon poängterade att entreprenörer inte kommer från något särskilt land. Framtidens entreprenörer står att hitta i varje land som tänker globalt.

På väg till Colombia…

Nu är jag på väg till Medellín, Colombia, för att medverka i en av världens största entreprenöriella mötesplatser: Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC). 14–17 mars hålls detta årliga evenemang som samlar runt 6 500 deltagare från fler än 160 länder.

ESBRI är svensk värd för Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW). Från början var syftet med GEC att samla alla GEW-värdar i ett interaktivt sammanhang för att utbyta idéer och vidareutveckla GEW. Men precis som GEW har växt från en vecka av entreprenörskapsfirande till en hel buffé av olika initiativ och tävlingar, så har GEC utvecklats till mycket mer än bara en samlingsplats för de närmast sörjande.

Temat för årets GEC är ”The Business of Next”. Under ett fullspäckat program kommer en rad olika beslutsfattare, entreprenörer och andra experter från hela världen att diskutera det globala entreprenöriella ekosystemet – nu och i framtiden.

Jag ser verkligen fram emot att vara en del av detta inspirerande evenemang. Jag ser även fram emot min längsta flygresa någonsin (12 timmar till Bogotá), som jag förhoppningsvis går ombord på om några minuter.
